For
the first time, a regular-season NFL game was streamed live on Twitter – for
free – receiving rave reviews from fans.
The
clash between the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills was available worldwide
(you did not need to have a Twitter account to watch), and unlike other recent
streaming debuts, went off largely without a hitch.
In
addition to very few users complaining of skipping or the feed dropping out,
Twitter's broadcast was roughly 20 seconds ahead of the NFL Gamepass app –
which is the NFL's official streaming app for all games.
The
game, which was won by the Jets 37-31, was also available to be viewed through
Twitter's apps on Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Xbox One.
Anthony
Noto, chief financial officer at Twitter, was glowing about the service in the
hours leading up to the first game. "These devices will bring Twitter's
live streaming video experience to life on the TV screen," he said.
"Twitter
has always been a great complement to TV, and now fans can enjoy even more
premium video with live Tweets – and the best content on Twitter – right from
their TVs. We're excited to introduce this new experience to people, without
requiring a paywall or having to log in to Twitter."
The one
criticism on the night seemed to stem from the stream of tweets accompanying
the broadcast, with users pointing out that the stream of tweets didn't
auto-refresh, nor did it seem to be curated to any extent.
Ten
games will be broadcast via the social media site during the season, with next
week's encounter featuring the New England Patriots and Houston Texans.
