The Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) announced a protest
scheduled for Friday, September 23 to press for the release of Kanu who was arrested
in Lagos in October 2015. The group has also been carrying out protest in an
agitation for independent Biafra state although President Muhammadu Buhari has
insisted that the unity of Nigeria was non-negotiable. Vanguard reports that
the chief of defence staff, Gen. Abayomi Olonishakin warned IPOB members to
desist or face the wrath of security operatives. He also extended the same
warning to militants who have been terrorising the Niger Delta region to stop
or will be dealt with.
He gave this vow on Tuesday, September 20 shortly after
declaring open the 2nd and 3rd quarter of the Chief of Army Staff Conference in
Makurdi in Benue.
He said: “We will use all that we have on any person or group
that goes contrary to this. We are using this opportunity to appeal and even
warn all those, who are responsible for sabotage of critical infrastructure to
channel their energy to developmental issues for the nation. “And even those,
who are also clamouring for secession, I think I want to advise them to channel
their effort toward the development of the nation. “The indivisibility of this
nation is sacrosanct just like the president – Muhammadu Buhari said, and we in
the military are poised to ensure that is achieved.” Olonishakin urged
Nigerians to embrace peace as that was the way the country can attain
development.
Meanwhile, Prince Kanu who is the brother of Nnamdi Kanu raised
alarm over the health of the leader of the IPOB and asked the President
Buhari-led federal government to allow him get medical treatment A splinter
group, the Reformed Indigenous People Of Biafra had claimed that Kanu was hale
and fine but Prince insisted that his brother was going through a tough time in
prison. “The leader of IPOB, Kanu is my brother and is having a severe
abdominal pain and occasional tightening in the chest resulting in cough. “My
brother needs urgent medical attention and we demand that a foreign doctors be
allowed to examine him because we believe more in their diagnosis after all
even the President travels abroad for treatment.”
