As the upper house of legislature continued its debate on the
economic recession, some of the senators called for the restructuring of the
country’s political system. Leading this call is senate chief whip, Olusola Adeyeye,
who believes that sharing of the burden of the centre by states would go a long
way in solving the country’s challenges. He said it is time to stop
over-burdening the Federal Government as “we cannot kill the goose that lays
the golden egg”. Senator Adeyeye’s position is backed by senator Sunday
Ogbuoji, who said the current recession is a blessing in disguise as there’s an
element of good in it to rethink things.
He expressed support for Adeyeye on
restructuring and devolution of powers while also bemoaning policy
inconsistency in the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Senator Andy Uba agreed with Ugbuoji on the worrying inconsistency. He noted
that “all we hear is discordant tunes from central bank, budget office and
finance ministry”. As a way to correct the anomaly, senator Uba charged
President Buhari to ensure portfolios are attached to ministerial lists so that
senators will know what to focus on when screening them. Deputy senate leader
Bala Ibn Na’Allah said his approach to the economic recession is a very
practical one.
He proposed that funds in TSA should be made available for
genuine businesses. Senator Na’Allah said the banking sector is most affected
by funds mopped up into the TSA with no alternative arrangement for those old
accounts of MDAs thus leading to the sack in the Banking Industry as the staff
had to be let go. Senator Na’Allah said that now there’s a need for a
redistribution of the country’s resources. He noted that while President Buhari
means well for the country, the current circumstances make it look otherwise.
On his part, Senator Solomon Adeola agreed with senators Uba and Ugbuoji on the
problem with the president’s economic team. He therefore tasked them to start
speaking with one voice.
