Following the continued and sustained agitation for
succession and perceived marginalisation of the south- east, the senators from the 5 south eastern
states met with President Muhammad Buhari
to
make some demands.
The meeting, the senators said was to inform the President
of the
massive infrastructure
deficit in the south eastern Nigeria and to also present to
him the expectations and demands of the region.
Below are some of the demands made by the senators
1.
Security and accommodation of the zone’s interest in the proposed loan,
2.
Release of leader of Independent People of Biafra, IPOB, Mr.
Nnamdi Kanu
3.
Construction of a rail Standard Gauge Spur from Agbor to Onitsha,
4.
Address the issues of kidnapping, herdsmen and IPOB,
5.
Establishment of a dry port in Abia State, Onitsha and Enugu,
6.
Request for a place in the National Security Council,
7.
Inclusion
of South East when concessioning federal roads and airports
8.
Construction of extra River Basin Development Authority for the zone.
A
breakdown showed that the lawmakers demanded a better funding of federal
projects and institutions in the region, arguing that less than 10 percent of
appropriated funds were released annually in last 10 years.
