There
was pandemonium in Abuja, yesterday, following news of the discovery of an
Improvised Explosive Device (IED), allegedly planted in a cooler under the
bridge near the popular Shoprite store at Jabi.
Residents,
especially motorists, commuters, workers and those who had gone to shop there
scampered for safety. According to an eyewitness, someone saw the cooler,
placed on a spot under the bridge, was unattended to for a long time, decided
to alert security personnel attached to the store.
Security
personnel, in turn, alerted the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command,
who immediately drafted personnel from the Anti-Bomb Squad to the scene.
On
getting there, police condoned off the area which resulted in traffic gridlock.
The police team created alternative routes for motorists to enable them
detonate the IED as well as and avoid any casualty.
However,
the anti-bomb squad found no IED in the cooler.
News
of the alleged IED spread round the FCT which caused panic among residents.
When
contacted, public relations officer in charge of the FCT Police Command, Anjuri
Mamzah said there was no cause for alarm.
According
to Mamzah “immediately the command received the news of the bomb, we
immediately dispatched the bomb section to the said location.
“On
getting to the location, they swept the area and the gadget they discovered was
not an IED or any other kind of explosive as it was speculated.
He
said what the police discovered “was actually a machine used in testing water
pressure” and assured that “there is no cause for alarm as the police in the
FCT, in conjunction with the military and other security agencies, are working
round the clock to ensure the security of the FCT and surrounding states.”
