Veteran striker Aritz Aduriz made history as he scored
all five goals for Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish club's 5-3 win against Genk
of Belgium in Group F.
Aduriz gave the Spanish side the lead in the eighth
minute, pouncing when Raul Garcia's header landed inside the six-yard box.
And the 35-year-old was given the chance to double his
tally when Iker Muniain was tripped in the box.
Aduriz promptly sent the keeper the wrong way and
smashed home his second.
Genk cut the lead to one four minutes later but Aduriz
completed his hat-trick before half-time with another spot kick.
The visitors scored again but Bilbao's veteran striker
raced through to restore the two-goal advantage with a fine finish.
And he scored his third penalty of the night to make
it 5-3 in stoppage time when Inaki Williams was impeded.
The tally doubled Aduriz's tally for the season to 10
goals in all competitions. The Basque club are second in Group F with six
points, behind Genk on goal difference and a point clear of both Sassuolo and
Rapid Vienna, who drew 2-2 in Italy.
No-one has scored five goals in a Europa League or
UEFA Cup main competition game since 1992 when Daniel Fonseca was Napoli's only
goalscorer in a 5-1 win at Valencia.
The list of those who have achieved the feat now runs
to eight players including Marco van Basten, who took advantage when Ajax ran
amok against Luxembourg minnows Differdange and won 14-0.
